COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes Creative Practice is structured around two core modules designed to develop students’ research and creative skills through practice-led inquiry. The MRes Methods module equips students with the methodological knowledge required to frame and design a research project, introducing a range of research methodologies and guiding students to evaluate and select approaches relevant to their specific questions or challenges. Students also complete the research ethics approval process before beginning the practical aspect of their work, ensuring that their projects are conducted responsibly and rigorously. Building on this foundation, the MRes Thesis module allows students to refine, develop, and implement their proposed research using UWL’s specialised resources, such as the Townshend Studio, recording studios, performance venues, and other facilities. Students document, analyse, and interpret practice-based work to generate new insights into contemporary and emerging trends in their field, while engaging with advanced scholarship to contextualise their outputs. The thesis is a 120-credit supervised project, delivered as either a 30,000–35,000-word thesis or a 15,000–20,000-word exegesis accompanied by a practice research portfolio representing up to 600 hours of work. Students also create public-facing research impact content, such as performances, workshops, social media, or audiovisual materials, ensuring their work is accessible, engaging, and professionally presented, bridging academic research with real-world creative practice.
