COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Criminology is structured to provide a combination of core theoretical knowledge, research skills, and specialised optional study areas, with a strong emphasis on independent research through the dissertation. In semester one, students focus on foundational subjects, including Criminological Theory, which explores key concepts, ideas, and theoretical frameworks in contemporary criminology, and Research Methodology, which equips students with the analytical and methodological skills necessary to conduct rigorous research. During this semester, students also begin work on the Dissertation module, which continues with supervision through semesters two and three, culminating in submission in September. Optional modules in semester one, such as Financial Crime and Transnational Organised Crime, allow students to tailor their learning to areas of personal or professional interest, depending on staff availability. In semester two, compulsory modules build on this foundation with Applied Criminology, focusing on practical applications of criminological theory, and Contemporary Issues in Crime and Criminal Justice, which examines current debates and challenges within the sector. The Dissertation continues alongside these modules, providing an opportunity for in-depth independent research. Optional modules in semester two, including Cybercrime and Internet Policing and Counter Terrorism, offer further specialisation in emerging and high-priority areas of criminology. Overall, the program combines theoretical, practical, and research-based learning to prepare graduates for careers in criminal justice, law enforcement, policy, or further academic study.
