COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Human Genetics degree provides a thorough understanding of genetic principles, molecular biology, and their applications in health, medicine, and research. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in cell and microbiology, biochemistry, human anatomy, physiology, genetics, and essential scientific skills, alongside a grounding in chemistry and molecular biology. The second year focuses on bioinformatics, systems biology, pharmacology, infection and immunity, genetics and evolution, and protein and enzyme function, while also developing research, leadership, and analytical skills. This combination equips students with the practical and theoretical expertise necessary to explore complex biological processes. In the final year, students undertake a research project that allows them to apply their knowledge in a focused study, while also studying clinical genetics and cytogenomics, nanobiology, genomics, population genetics, and the chromosomal and genomic basis of disease. The course emphasizes the integration of cutting-edge techniques in genomics, bioinformatics, and molecular research, preparing graduates to interpret genetic data, understand the genetic basis of diseases, and contribute to advancements in biotechnology, clinical genetics, and biomedical research. Graduates gain both scientific knowledge and practical experience, positioning them for careers in research, healthcare, biotechnology, or further postgraduate study in genetics and related disciplines.
