COURSE CURRICULUM

This Criminology degree offers students a thorough understanding of crime, its causes, and the functioning of criminal justice systems, blending theoretical study with practical application. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through modules such as criminal process and responsibility, criminological theory, policing society, victims of crime, research methods, and applying criminological skills in real-world contexts. The second year builds on this foundation, exploring contemporary issues like cybercrime, global and environmental crime, criminal justice in practice, and justice through equity, diversity, and inclusion, alongside methods and analysis in criminological practice and explanations of criminal behavior. In the final year, students focus on advanced study through a dissertation and a module on punishment, rehabilitation, and offender management, while also choosing optional modules that allow specialization in areas such as terrorism and counter-terrorism, criminal law and youth justice, crime scene investigation, drugs and crime, hate crime, and mental health in criminal justice. The course emphasizes work-based learning, research, and practical engagement, ensuring students gain firsthand experience of the criminal justice system and the challenges faced by practitioners. By combining academic study, fieldwork, and professional skills development, graduates are well-prepared for careers in law enforcement, probation, policy, research, and other areas within the criminal justice sector.
