COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biological Sciences degree provides a broad and in-depth understanding of life sciences, equipping students with the skills needed for careers in research, conservation, ecology, and related fields. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through compulsory modules including Cell and Microbiology, Essential Skills for Bioscientists, Fundamentals of Chemistry, Fundamentals of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Genetics and Disease, and Human Anatomy and Physiology, developing essential laboratory and analytical skills alongside theoretical knowledge. The second year advances this knowledge with modules such as Bioinformatics and Systems Biology, Research, Development and Leadership, Genetics and Evolution, Plants and Fungi, Wildlife Conservation, and Behavioural Ecology, fostering a deeper understanding of ecological systems, biodiversity, and conservation principles. Students gain experience in both practical and theoretical approaches to studying living organisms and their environments. In the final year, students focus on specialized topics and independent research through modules including a Final Year Research Project, Ecological Consultancy, Animal Behaviour, Vertebrate Biology, and Invertebrate Biology. These modules emphasize hands-on fieldwork, experimental design, and data analysis, allowing students to apply their skills to real-world environmental and biological challenges. The course balances practical training, research experience, and theoretical understanding, preparing graduates for careers in ecology, conservation, environmental consultancy, and scientific research.
