COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biochemistry degree offers a comprehensive study of the chemical and biological principles that govern living systems, preparing students for careers in research, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and related industries. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through compulsory modules including Cell and Microbiology, Essential Skills for Bioscientists, Fundamentals of Chemistry, Fundamentals of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Genetics and Disease, and Human Anatomy and Physiology, establishing essential knowledge and laboratory skills. The second year advances this foundation with modules such as Bioinformatics and Systems Biology, Research, Development and Leadership, Genetics and Evolution, Proteins and Enzymes, and Cell Metabolism, while optional modules including Fundamentals of Pharmacology, Clinical Biochemistry, and Infection and Immunity allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests. The final year focuses on integrating knowledge and practical experience through a Final Year Research Project, Biochemical Basis of Disease, and Applied Molecular Medicine, with optional modules covering specialized areas such as Antimicrobial, Antineoplastic and Neuropharmacology, Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Renal Pharmacology, Drug Discovery and Development, and Population Genetics and Genomics. Throughout the course, students develop practical laboratory techniques, analytical skills, scientific literacy, and problem-solving abilities, equipping them to pursue advanced research, professional practice, or further study in biochemistry and related life sciences fields.
