COURSE CURRICULUM

The three-year BMus (Hons) Popular Music Performance program is designed to develop skilled, versatile, and industry-ready musicians capable of pursuing professional careers in the contemporary music scene. In the first year, students establish a solid foundation through modules such as musicianship for popular performers, performance for recording, songwriting and arranging, situated performance, popular music scenes and subcultures, and understanding creative industries. These modules combine practical performance skills with an understanding of cultural contexts and industry structures. The second year builds on this foundation with advanced training and professional development, including advanced musicianship for popular performers, performance artistry, research methods for performance, business skills for the music industry, popular music teaching and pedagogy, and leading in performance. This stage develops students’ technical proficiency, creative expression, and industry awareness while introducing entrepreneurial and leadership skills. In the final year, the focus shifts to professional application and independent creative projects, with modules such as performance for audience, creative performance practice, performance for industry, promoting your career, and the popular music performance project. Students consolidate their learning through practical experience and portfolio development, preparing them for careers in live performance, recording, music education, and other areas of the popular music industry. The program equips graduates with technical mastery, creative confidence, and professional readiness.
