COURSE CURRICULUM

This English and media communications degree combines literary study with practical media skills, offering students a flexible curriculum tailored to their interests. In the first year, students take two compulsory literature modules, focusing on the history, form, and genre of English literature as well as critical approaches, alongside three optional modules selected from media and communications offerings, including video production, podcasting, media theories, live radio production, and media ethics. In the second year, students further develop practical and analytical skills by selecting six optional modules, balancing media-focused courses such as industry experience, visual media cultures, digital and social media studies, and live radio production. The third year emphasizes independent research and specialised study through a double-weighted dissertation, supported by four optional modules chosen from literature and media strands. Literature options include British and Irish drama, crime fiction, and Shakespeare on screen, while media modules cover video essays, media projects, experimental communications, writing for performance, ethics, and media philosophy. Across the three years, the program fosters both critical thinking and creative practice, enabling students to analyse texts, media, and communications theory while developing practical production skills. Graduates leave equipped with a versatile skill set applicable to careers in publishing, media production, journalism, creative industries, and research, with the ability to create, critique, and innovate across multiple platforms.
