COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies degree provides a comprehensive understanding of the theory and practice involved in supporting the learning and development of children and young people. In the first year, students explore foundational topics such as understanding education, the philosophy of inclusion, children’s rights, promoting development, and building positive learning communities. This lays the groundwork for developing knowledge of how children learn and thrive within supportive environments. In the second year, the course emphasizes practical application and professional preparation through modules on using play to support development, communication, language and literacy, cultural and societal influences on children, and research in practice. Students also gain hands-on experience via professional practice placements, learning to apply evidence-based approaches in early years settings. The final year focuses on advanced topics, including policy and practice in early childhood, leadership to support children, families and practitioners, and inclusive approaches for children with special educational needs and disabilities. Students also study the connections between children, food, and the environment, and complete an independent dissertation in childhood studies. Throughout the course, students develop the skills, knowledge, and professional competence to work effectively in early years settings, preparing them for careers in education, childcare, social care, and related fields while fostering expertise in research, leadership, and inclusive practice.
