COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Nanoscience and Nanomaterials at Sussex combines core and optional modules to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of nanoscale materials and their applications in emerging technologies. Core modules give all students a strong foundation, beginning with MSc Project Research Skills in the autumn term to develop essential research techniques. Autumn teaching also includes Advanced Materials for Sustainable Energy, preparing students to apply materials science principles to energy-related challenges. In the spring term, students study Introduction to Nanomaterials and Nano-characterisation, learning key methods for analysing and manipulating nanomaterials, and continue to develop project skills through the MSc Project P&A in the spring and summer terms. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies, with autumn options such as Challenges in Energy and Climate Policy, Condensed State Physics, and Data Analysis Techniques, and spring options including Chemistry of Functional Materials, Lasers and Photonics, and Semiconductors and Nanomaterial Devices. The course combines theoretical instruction with hands-on experience, preparing students to work on interdisciplinary research projects, develop practical problem-solving skills, and contribute to technological innovation in nanoscience. Graduates leave equipped for careers in academia, industry, and research, with the technical expertise, analytical ability, and project experience necessary to advance understanding and application of nanoscale materials in areas ranging from energy solutions to advanced technologies and materials engineering.
