COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Conservation Science at Sussex combines core modules with optional courses to provide a comprehensive understanding of conservation biology and environmental management. Core modules ensure all students gain a solid foundation, with autumn teaching covering Conservation Biology and Biodiversity, and spring teaching focused on Advanced Conservation Biology. The year-long MSc Conservation Project allows students to carry out an in-depth, independent research project, applying practical skills and scientific knowledge to real-world conservation challenges. Optional modules give students the flexibility to tailor their studies to their interests and include autumn options such as Current Topics in Evolution, Behaviour and Conservation, Digital Journalism, Environmental Law and Governance, Masters Tropical Rainforest Field Course, Rewilding and Ecosystem Services, and The Science of Climate Change. Spring options further enhance practical and field-based learning through Animals in the Anthropocene, Biodiversity and Natural Resources Law, Digital Features, Field Biology and Conservation Skills, Masters African Zoology Field Course, and Masters Mediterranean Ecology Field Course. These modules integrate theoretical study with hands-on fieldwork, interdisciplinary perspectives, and research-led projects, equipping students with the skills to analyze ecological systems, develop conservation strategies, and address environmental challenges. Graduates leave prepared for careers in research, conservation organizations, environmental management, and related fields, or for further academic study, with the expertise to make meaningful contributions to global conservation efforts.
