COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Molecular Biology at Sussex combines core modules with optional courses to provide comprehensive training in modern bioscience, preparing students for research-focused careers or further study. Core modules ensure all students develop a strong foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of molecular and cellular biology. In the autumn term, students study Advanced Methods in Molecular Research and Practical Techniques in Cell and Molecular Biology, building essential laboratory skills and methodological expertise. Spring teaching includes Current Topics in Molecular Cell Biology and the Life Sciences Masters Research Proposal, enabling students to design and plan independent research projects. The spring and summer terms are dedicated to the Life Sciences Master of Science Research Project, giving students the opportunity to conduct in-depth, original research within a supportive, research-active laboratory environment. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, with autumn options such as Regulating Gene Expression and Skills for Research Bioscientists, and spring options including Genome Instability in Disease and Cancer, Genomics and Bioinformatics, and Structural Basis of Protein Mechanism. By combining advanced theoretical training with hands-on laboratory experience and independent research, the MSc equips graduates with the practical skills, analytical expertise, and professional experience required for careers in academic research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and related fields, as well as providing a strong foundation for doctoral study in molecular biology and related disciplines.
