COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at Sussex combines core modules with optional courses to provide comprehensive training in computational and biological sciences. Core modules ensure all students gain a strong foundation, with autumn teaching covering Bioinformatics and AI I and Data Science Research Methods, while spring modules include Bioinformatics and AI II and Machine Learning, equipping students with essential skills in programming, data analysis, and artificial intelligence. The summer term is dedicated to the Life Sciences MSc Project, allowing students to apply their knowledge and techniques to an original research project. Optional modules provide opportunities to tailor the course to individual interests and include autumn options such as Algorithmic Approaches to Mathematics, Algorithmic Data Science, The Molecular Basis of Life, and Programming for Python, as well as spring options like Biological Image Analysis, Evolutionary and Ecological Informatics, Network Science, and Machine Learning and Statistics for Health. Students gain hands-on experience working with real biological datasets, modern computational tools, and research-driven projects, developing expertise in building bioinformatics pipelines, analyzing next-generation sequencing data, and applying AI to complex biological problems. By combining theoretical training, practical skills, and research experience, the MSc prepares graduates for careers in biotechnology, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, academia, and other fields that require advanced computational and analytical approaches to biological research.
