COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Astronomy at Sussex provides a comprehensive curriculum that combines core modules, optional courses, and a substantial research project to prepare students for advanced work in astrophysics. Core modules ensure a strong foundation in both theoretical and observational aspects of the field. All students engage in the MSc Project Research Skills module throughout the year, equipping them with essential research techniques and analytical skills. In the autumn term, students study Cosmology and Galactic Astrophysics, gaining a deep understanding of the structure, evolution, and dynamics of the universe and galaxies. The spring term focuses on Astrophysical Processes and Stellar and Planetary Physics, exploring the physical mechanisms driving stars, planets, and other celestial bodies. Students complete the MSc Project P&A in the spring and summer, allowing them to conduct an independent, in-depth research project under expert supervision. Optional modules give students flexibility to tailor their studies to specific interests, with choices including Data Analysis Techniques, General Relativity, Programming through Python, Advanced Cosmology, Frontiers in Particle Physics, and Monte Carlo Simulations. This combination of core and optional modules, alongside research-led teaching, equips graduates with strong theoretical knowledge, computational expertise, and practical skills, preparing them for careers in astrophysics, astronomy research, or further doctoral study.
