COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes in Neuroscience at Sussex combines core modules and optional study to provide an intensive, research-focused program designed for students aiming to deepen their expertise in modern neuroscience. Core modules build a strong foundation in advanced research techniques and current topics in the field. In the autumn term, students study Advanced Techniques in Neuroscience, gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge experimental methods. In the spring term, Current Topics in Neuroscience and the Life Sciences Masters Research Proposal module develop critical understanding of contemporary research questions and prepare students to design their independent projects. The program culminates with the Neuroscience Research Project, completed in the spring and summer terms, which allows students to conduct a substantial, supervised research investigation within one of Sussex’s research groups, accounting for half of the course credits and providing extensive practical experience. Optional modules enable students to tailor their learning to specialised areas of interest, such as Advanced Methods in Molecular Research, Algorithmic Approaches to Mathematics, Imaging in Brain Diseases, Intelligence in Animals and Machines, Skills for Research Bioscientists, and Synaptic Communication. Through this combination of core study, options, and hands-on research, students acquire technical expertise, experimental and analytical skills, and in-depth knowledge in cognitive, cellular, and systems neuroscience, preparing them for doctoral study or careers in neuroscience research and related scientific fields.
