COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Social Work at the University of Sussex equips students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to work in a wide range of social care settings. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation in social work theory and practice through core modules such as human development and social relationships, law and social policy, and social adversity, risk, and resilience. Alongside these, practical training is provided through Social Work Practice 1 and Theory, Methods and Values in Practice 1, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world contexts while developing professional skills and ethical understanding. Research methods and dissertation modules run throughout the year, supporting students to build independent analytical and academic skills. In the second year, students advance their expertise with modules focusing on organisations and inter-professional practice, Social Work Practice 2, and Theory, Methods and Values in Practice 2. These modules emphasise collaboration across agencies, reflective practice, and the ability to address complex social issues affecting children, adults, older people, and vulnerable populations, including those experiencing mental health challenges, disability, substance use, homelessness, or displacement. Graduates leave prepared to work effectively with diverse service users and to collaborate with professionals across police, schools, healthcare, probation, and community services, equipped to make a meaningful impact in social work practice.
