COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Social and Political Thought at Sussex combines core modules, optional study, and a dissertation to provide a comprehensive and research-driven program. Core modules lay a strong foundation in social and political theory, beginning with Theorising the Social in the autumn term, which introduces students to key concepts and frameworks in social thought. In the spring term, Emerging Research in Philosophy guides students in understanding contemporary debates and research methodologies, preparing them for independent scholarship. The summer term is dedicated to the dissertation, where students undertake an in-depth research project under expert supervision, developing advanced analytical and writing skills. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, offering topics such as Ethics and Normativity, Figures in Social and Political Thought, Ideology and the Political, Living and Dying from Medieval to Renaissance, and Women and Human Rights. These modules provide opportunities to engage with both historical and contemporary perspectives, combining philosophical, political, and social approaches. The program encourages independent thinking, critical analysis, and interdisciplinary research skills, while fostering a supportive and collaborative academic community.
