COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Anthropology at Sussex combines core modules with a variety of optional courses to provide a comprehensive understanding of human cultures and societies. Core modules ensure that all students gain a strong foundation in the discipline, with autumn teaching covering Anthropology and the Ethnographic Imagination, Issues in Contemporary Ethnography, and Thinking Like an Anthropologist. In the spring term, students develop research skills through Anthropological Research Methods, while the summer term is dedicated to the dissertation, allowing them to conduct independent ethnographic research. Alongside these core modules, students can select from a wide range of optional courses to tailor their studies to their interests. Spring options include Childhood and Youth in the Contemporary World, Critical Debates in Environment and Development, Fair Trade, Ethical Business and New Moral Economies, Knowledge, Power and Resistance, Poverty, Vulnerability and the Global Economy, Queer Worlds: Sexualities, Knowledge, Affect, and Visual, Sensory and Digital Anthropology. The summer also offers a Dissertation with Placement option, providing practical experience and applied learning. By combining theoretical study, practical research methods, and optional courses, the MA equips students with the skills and knowledge to analyze complex social and cultural issues. Graduates are prepared for careers in NGOs, research and policy organizations, education, and other professional contexts where anthropological expertise is valuable.
