COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sexual Dissidence MA combines core modules with a range of optional courses to provide a comprehensive understanding of LGBTQ+/Queer Studies. Core modules give all students a strong foundation, with autumn teaching covering Critical Issues in Queer Theory and the summer term dedicated to the dissertation, allowing students to develop independent research on topics related to sexual dissidence. Alongside the core curriculum, students can choose from a variety of optional modules to tailor their studies and explore areas of personal or professional interest. Autumn options include Critical Reading in Advanced Gender Theory, Gender and Representation, Gender Politics and Social Research, Gender, Sexuality and Digital Culture, and The Avant-Garde in North America: Creative and Critical Practice. Spring options expand into practical and historical explorations, including Activist Media Practice, Art’s Queer Stories, Living and Dying from Medieval to Renaissance, Sex, Work and Reproduction, Techno-Feminism History and Practice, and Voices in the Archives: Writing from History. These modules allow students to engage critically with theory, history, media, and creative practice, while developing practical and research skills applicable to diverse contexts. By combining theoretical study, creative exploration, and independent research, the MA prepares graduates for careers in media, the arts, policy, activism, academia, and other fields where understanding sexuality, identity, and social justice is central.
