COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Migration Studies at the University of Sussex provides a comprehensive understanding of migration processes, their causes, and their social, economic, and political impacts. Core modules in the autumn term, including Migrants and Society: Global Transformations and Migration and Global Development, introduce students to the key theoretical frameworks and global perspectives needed to analyse migration patterns and their implications for societies. In the spring term, Research Methods and Professional Skills equips students with practical and analytical tools to conduct rigorous research and engage with migration issues ethically and effectively. The program culminates in a Dissertation in Migration Studies during the summer, allowing students to pursue in-depth independent research on topics of interest, with an option for a Dissertation with Placement in Global Studies to gain applied experience. Students can tailor their studies further through a variety of optional modules covering specialised areas such as Decolonising, Diversifying and Demythologising, Forced Labour, Trafficking and Global Mobility, Migrant Transnationalism, Refugees and Diaspora, Navigating the Complexities of Forced Migration and Displacement, and Poverty, Vulnerability and the Global Economy. By combining theoretical knowledge, research skills, and practical experience, the MA prepares graduates for careers in international organisations, non-governmental organisations, policy, advocacy, and research, equipping them to address complex migration challenges and contribute to evidence-based solutions on a global scale.
