COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Media, Communication and Development at the University of Sussex provides students with a comprehensive understanding of how media can be used to drive social change and development. Core modules in the autumn term, including Critical Perspectives on Development, Media and Social Change and Producing Media for Development and Social Change, establish a strong foundation in both theoretical analysis and practical media production skills. In the spring term, students can select from a wide range of optional modules such as Activism for Development and Social Justice, Activist Media Practice, Critical Debates in Environment and Development, Decolonising, Diversifying and Demythologising, Forced Labour, Trafficking and Global Mobility, Knowledge, Power and Resistance, Photography, Podcasting, Poverty, Vulnerability and the Global Economy, Queer Worlds, Race, Culture and the Media, Short Documentary, and Visual, Sensory and Digital Anthropology. These options allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests, exploring diverse approaches to media, social justice, and global development. Students also have the choice of dissertation pathways, including a media project, written dissertation, or a placement combined with either project or dissertation, providing opportunities for applied research and professional experience. By integrating critical theory, practical skills, and ethical engagement, the MA prepares graduates for careers in media production, advocacy, development, research, and organisations focused on social impact and global change.
