COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in History at Sussex is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in historical knowledge, research skills, and analytical thinking, while offering flexibility to study full-time or part-time. Core modules give students essential grounding in historical methods, key debates, and thematic knowledge, preparing them to pursue their individual research interests. In the autumn term, students study Historical Skills and Methods alongside The People’s Heritage, which introduces approaches to public and community history. The spring term focuses on Human Rights in History, exploring the development and impact of human rights across different historical periods, while students may also select from optional modules such as Living and Dying, Medieval to Renaissance, Race, Photography, Archives, and Violence in Contemporary History, which allow them to tailor their studies to specific interests and broaden their understanding of historical themes. The summer term is dedicated to the dissertation, offering students the opportunity to undertake independent research, integrating the methods and concepts learned throughout the course. Options are periodically reviewed to reflect the latest scholarship, ensuring students engage with contemporary debates and research approaches. Graduates gain critical research and writing skills, a thorough understanding of historical perspectives, and the ability to analyze complex historical and cultural issues, preparing them for careers in research, education, heritage, and other professional fields.
