COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Gender and Development combines core modules, optional courses, and independent research to provide a comprehensive understanding of gender issues in development. Core modules begin with Gender, Identity and Inclusion and Theoretical Approaches to Gender and Development in the autumn, introducing students to key debates, concepts, and analytical frameworks. In the spring, The Politics of Gender and Research Design further develop critical thinking and methodological skills, while the summer term is dedicated to the Dissertation in Gender and Development, enabling students to conduct independent research under expert supervision. To tailor their studies, students can choose from a wide range of optional modules covering contemporary development challenges, including Aid and Poverty: the Political Economy of International Development Assistance, Climate Change and Development, Competing in the Green Economy, Development in Cities, Governance of Violent Conflict and (In)security, Health and Development, Multisectoral Responses to Crises and Vulnerability, Nutrition, Public Finance, Reflective and Creative Practice for Social Change, Theory and Practice of Impact Evaluation, and Unruly Politics. Students may also undertake an IDS Placement-based Dissertation to gain practical experience in development settings. The program equips graduates with analytical, research, and professional skills, preparing them for careers in gender-focused research, policy-making, program management, international development, and advocacy, as well as for further academic study.
