COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Food and Development provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the complex interplay between food systems, development, and global challenges. Core modules give students a strong foundation, beginning with Critical Debates in Development Theory and Food Politics and Development in the autumn, which introduce key concepts, debates, and policy perspectives related to food security, nutrition, and sustainable development. In the spring, Research Methods and Professional Skills develops students’ abilities to design and conduct rigorous research, while the summer term is dedicated to the Dissertation in Food and Development, allowing students to pursue independent research under expert supervision. Students can tailor their studies through a wide range of optional modules, including Climate Change and Development, Climate Change: Impacts and Adaptation, Competing in the Green Economy, Fair Trade, Ethical Business & New Moral Economies, Nutrition, Poverty, Vulnerability and the Global Economy, and Sustainability and Policy Processes in Agriculture, Environment, and Health. Additionally, students may undertake a Dissertation with Placement, gaining practical experience in applied settings. The program equips graduates with critical thinking, analytical, and professional skills, preparing them for careers in international development, policy, research, consultancy, and advocacy, or for further academic study. By combining theoretical insight with practical engagement, the MA develops informed and capable professionals ready to address pressing food and development challenges.
