COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Film provides students with a comprehensive combination of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and creative experience in filmmaking. Core modules begin in the autumn with Documentary Filmmaking: Approaches and Practices and Fiction Filmmaking: Directing and Visualisation, which equip students with the essential techniques, conceptual frameworks, and production skills for crafting compelling visual narratives. Throughout the year, students undertake Final Filmmaking Projects in both documentary and fiction, allowing them to apply their learning to substantial, independent productions that showcase their creativity and technical expertise. Optional modules give students flexibility to explore specific areas of interest and further develop their portfolios. In the spring, options include Collaborative Fiction Film Project, Photography: Documentary, Landscape, Politics, Podcasting, Short Documentary: Research and Production, and Writing for the Screen. These modules emphasize collaborative work, interdisciplinary approaches, and the development of professional skills such as research, storytelling, production management, and critical reflection. The course balances practical experience with conceptual understanding, preparing students to navigate the evolving film and media industries. Graduates leave with a strong portfolio, hands-on experience, and versatile skills suitable for careers in directing, producing, screenwriting, editing, cinematography, or related creative roles, as well as opportunities for further academic study in film and media disciplines.
