COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Global Development combines core modules, optional courses, and independent research to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address complex development challenges. Core modules provide a solid foundation, beginning with Ideas in Development and Policy, Evidence and Practice in the autumn, followed by Research Design in the spring and summer, and culminating in the Dissertation in Development Studies, where students conduct independent research on a topic of their choice. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to their interests, covering a wide range of themes including economic perspectives, gender, identity and inclusion, political economy, power and social perspectives, climate change, governance, health, nutrition, public finance, and sustainability. Other options focus on applied and practical skills, such as business as a development actor, designing critical enquiry, reflective and creative practice for social change, and impact evaluation. Students may also choose an IDS placement-based dissertation to gain hands-on experience working with development organisations. The program emphasizes critical engagement with theory, policy, and practice, preparing graduates to analyse development issues, design interventions, and contribute to social change. By combining rigorous academic training with practical experience, the MSc equips students for careers in international development, policy, research, and consultancy, as well as for further doctoral study.
