COURSE CURRICULUM

The Childhood and Youth Studies MA at the University of Sussex provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the experiences, challenges, and rights of children and young people in contemporary society. Core modules give a strong foundation in academic and research skills, preparing students to critically explore complex issues in childhood and youth studies. In the autumn term, students engage with modules such as Contemporary Issues in Childhood and Youth: Research and Practice and Theorising Childhood and Youth, which introduce key theoretical frameworks and practical approaches to understanding children’s lives. The spring term focuses on examining childhood and youth in a global and societal context through modules like Childhood and Youth in the Contemporary World, Curriculum, Learning and Society, Gender and Identities: Education, Citizenship and Youth, Global Childhoods: Rights, Protection and Justice, Practice Experience with Children and Youth, and Refugees, Education and Development. Alongside core modules, students can choose from a range of options to tailor their learning according to their interests and career goals. The program blends theoretical discussions, independent research, and practical experiences, including hands-on practice with children and youth, fostering both analytical and professional skills. Graduates are equipped to contribute to policy, education, social services, and advocacy work, applying evidence-based knowledge to improve the wellbeing and development of young people locally and globally.
