COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Anthropology and Development at the University of Sussex offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to provide a deep understanding of development issues through an anthropological lens. Core modules introduce students to key concepts and methods, with autumn teaching covering Anthropology for Development, Critical Approaches to Anthropology and Development, and Thinking Like an Anthropologist, which establish a strong theoretical foundation and analytical skills. In the spring term, students focus on Anthropological Research Methods, gaining practical training in ethnographic techniques, data collection, and research design. The program culminates in a Dissertation in Anthropology during the summer, allowing students to conduct in-depth independent research that applies anthropological theory to real-world development challenges. To personalise their studies, students can select from a wide range of optional modules that explore specialised topics such as Activism for Development and Social Justice, Childhood and Youth in the Contemporary World, Critical Debates in Environment and Development, Decolonising, Diversifying and Demythologising, Fair Trade, Ethical Business and New Moral Economies, Knowledge, Power and Resistance, Poverty, Vulnerability and the Global Economy, Queer Worlds, and Visual, Sensory and Digital Anthropology. A Dissertation with Placement in Global Studies further offers applied research experience. By combining theory, research skills, and practical application, the MA prepares graduates for careers in international development, policy, humanitarian work, research, and advocacy.
