COURSE CURRICULUM

The psychology course at Sussex provides a comprehensive and flexible program, equipping students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to understand human behaviour. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through core modules including cognition in clinical contexts, individuals and groups, psychology as a science, psychobiology, analysing data, and psychology of childhood. This prepares them for more advanced study in the second year, where core modules such as cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, brain and behaviour, social psychology, and quantitative and qualitative methods deepen understanding of key areas in psychology. In the third year, students complete a research dissertation and select from a wide range of options to specialise in areas of interest, including clinical, educational, forensic, health, social, and developmental psychology, as well as neuroscience and cognitive psychology. Elective modules cover topics such as autism across the lifespan, positive psychology, organisational psychology, psychology of collective action, psychology of exercise and wellbeing, and contemporary issues in child development and mental health. The program combines rigorous research-led teaching with practical application, offering hands-on experience in analysing data, understanding brain function, and exploring human behaviour in various social and clinical contexts. Graduates gain strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills, preparing them for careers in psychology, research, healthcare, or further study.
