COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology course at Sussex provides a comprehensive foundation in understanding human behaviour, mental processes, and clinical conditions. In the first year, students develop core knowledge in areas such as cognition, psychobiology, childhood development, and the application of psychology to everyday problems, alongside learning essential research and data analysis skills. The second year builds on this foundation with modules in cognitive, developmental, social, and clinical psychology, sleep and mental health, brain and behaviour, and quantitative and qualitative research methods, giving students a deeper understanding of psychological theory and practice. In the final year, students undertake a research dissertation and study clinical psychology in practice, while also selecting from a wide range of options to tailor their learning to their interests. Options cover topics such as cognitive neuroscience, forensic psychology, educational psychology, health and positive psychology, organisational psychology, the psychology of appetite, exercise, sleep, family, and collective behaviour, as well as contemporary issues such as autism across the lifespan, prejudice, inequality, and manipulation of behaviour. Throughout the degree, students gain practical experience through research projects and applied learning, preparing them for careers in clinical practice, research, health services, education, and other fields that require advanced knowledge of psychology and its applications in real-world contexts.
