COURSE CURRICULUM

The Neuroscience course at Sussex provides a thorough grounding in the structure and function of the brain and nervous system, preparing students to understand and address neurological and behavioural challenges. In the first year, students build a foundation in cells, organisms, systems, physiology, disease, biochemistry, molecular biology, and neuroscience, alongside training in research methods, ethics, and scientific skills. The second year expands this knowledge through modules on human genetics, genomics, principles of neuronal function, neural circuits, developmental biology, and professional research skills, with optional studies in areas such as immunology, evolutionary biology, and animal behaviour. In the final year, students undertake a substantial bioscience research project while tailoring their learning with options that deepen understanding of topics including mental health, synaptic communication, neuropharmacology, genomics, brain disorders, and the interface of neuroscience with innovation and technology. Practical laboratory experience is emphasized throughout, and students develop computing, programming, data analysis, and communication skills essential for modern neuroscience research. This program equips graduates with the expertise to pursue careers in biotechnology, healthcare, academic research, science communication, and related fields.
