COURSE CURRICULUM

The Neuroscience and Psychology course at Sussex combines the study of neurobiology with cognitive and clinical psychology, offering students a strong foundation in both disciplines. In the first year, students develop core knowledge through modules such as Cells, Organisms and Systems, Psychology of Child Development, Cell and Molecular Biology, Neuroscience and Behaviour, Social Psychology and Individual Differences, and Research Methods for Neuroscience. This provides a solid grounding in understanding human behaviour, brain function, and experimental techniques. In the second year, students advance to modules including Biological Psychology, Principles of Neuronal Function, Neural Circuits, and Psychology of Cognitive Processes, alongside research skills development. Optional modules such as Human Genetics and Genomics, Immunology, Cell Regulation, and Developmental Biology allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests. In the final year, the course emphasizes practical research experience and advanced understanding of psychological and neuroscientific topics through the Third Year Bioscience Research Project, Understanding Clinical Psychology, and Advanced Topics in Psychology. Students can further explore areas such as Cognitive Neuroscience, Biological Psychology of Mental Health, Molecular Neuropharmacology, Neurobiology of Brain Disorders, Synaptic Communication, and Intelligence in Animals and Machines. This structure ensures graduates develop transferable research, analytical, and data-handling skills, preparing them for careers in healthcare, biotechnology, academic research, mental health services, or science communication.
