COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Neuroscience course at Sussex provides a comprehensive study of the human brain and nervous system, combining theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory experience. In the first year, students gain a foundation in cell biology, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, neuroscience, and research methods, while also exploring the ethical and societal dimensions of science. The second year builds on this base with modules on human genetics and genomics, principles of medical neuroscience, neural circuits, cell regulation, pharmacology, developmental biology, and professional research skills. In the final year, students undertake a bioscience research project and study the neurobiology of brain disorders, applying advanced techniques and analytical skills to real-world problems. Alongside core modules, students can choose from options such as biological psychology of mental health, cell signalling and therapeutics, intelligence in animals and machines, genomics and bioinformatics, molecular neuropharmacology, and science of memory, enabling them to tailor their studies to their interests and career goals. The program equips students with expertise in neuroscience, experimental techniques, data analysis, computing, and professional research skills, preparing them for careers in medicine, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, academic research, science communication, and public engagement.
