COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics BSc at Sussex provides a comprehensive foundation in both pure and applied mathematics, preparing students to tackle complex problems in real-world contexts. In the first year, students develop essential skills through core modules in analysis, discrete mathematics, linear algebra, number theory, computational mathematics, and the fundamentals of mathematics. The second year builds on this foundation with more advanced topics, including algebra, calculus of several variables, differential equations, numerical analysis, real analysis, probability, and statistics. In the third year, students explore specialised areas such as partial differential equations and complete a project called Maths Matters, allowing them to apply their knowledge to practical and theoretical problems. Alongside core modules, students can select from a variety of options to tailor their studies, including applied numerical analysis, financial mathematics, functional analysis, mathematical biology, cryptography, dynamical systems, machine learning, statistical inference, and data science research methods. The course emphasizes analytical thinking, modelling, and problem-solving, with opportunities to work on computational projects and apply mathematics in interdisciplinary contexts. Graduates leave with strong quantitative and research skills, equipped for careers in data analysis, finance, software development, scientific research, and further study in mathematics or related fields.
