COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics and Economics degree at Sussex combines rigorous mathematical training with a solid grounding in economic theory, preparing students to tackle complex real-world problems. In the first year, students develop core skills in analysis, linear algebra, computational mathematics, and microeconomics, building a strong foundation in both quantitative methods and economic concepts. The second year expands on this knowledge with modules in multivariable calculus, probability, ordinary differential equations, numerical analysis, real analysis, and global economic history, deepening mathematical understanding while applying it to economic contexts. In the third year, students explore advanced topics such as partial differential equations, behavioural economics, international trade, and complete a project module, Maths Matters, to consolidate their learning and develop independent research skills. Options across the course allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, with choices including applied numerical analysis, financial mathematics, functional analysis, data science research methods, cryptography, machine learning, dynamical systems, Monte Carlo simulations, and statistical inference. The program emphasizes analytical and problem-solving skills, enabling graduates to apply mathematical techniques to economic questions, data analysis, and modelling. Students also gain practical experience using industry-standard software, preparing them for careers in economics, finance, research, consultancy, data science, and policy-making, where quantitative and analytical expertise is essential.
