COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics and Data Science BSc at Sussex provides a comprehensive foundation in both pure mathematics and data science applications, equipping students with the skills to analyse and interpret complex data. In the first year, students study core topics such as analysis, linear algebra, fundamentals of mathematics, computational mathematics, foundations of data analysis, and data structures and algorithms, providing a strong base in mathematical reasoning and computational techniques. The second year builds on this foundation with modules in calculus of several variables, probability, ordinary differential equations, scientific computing, applied machine learning, numerical analysis, probability and statistics, and real analysis, allowing students to develop advanced analytical and modelling skills. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through core modules such as linear statistical models, partial differential equations, statistical inference, and a project-focused module called Maths Matters. Additional optional modules give students the opportunity to explore applied numerical analysis, financial mathematics, functional analysis, mathematical biology, complex analysis, cryptography, dynamical systems, Monte Carlo simulations, and machine learning for health. The course emphasizes practical data-handling and problem-solving using industry-standard software, while also developing critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and research skills. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in data science, statistics, finance, software engineering, and other fields requiring strong analytical expertise.
