COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography program at Sussex provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between natural environments and human societies, preparing them to address critical global challenges. In the first year, students build a foundation through core modules covering human geographies, environmental management, earth systems, quantitative and analytical skills, biodiversity, and urban mobility. This year introduces essential concepts and practical skills, preparing students to investigate complex geographical issues. In the second year, the curriculum expands to include environmental research methods, geographical information systems, global climate change, and landscape dynamics. Students can also choose from options such as conservation biology, sustainable development, population and community ecology, and overseas fieldwork, allowing them to tailor their learning to personal interests and gain hands-on experience in local and international settings. The final year focuses on independent research, with the Geography Thesis serving as a central component. Students continue to deepen their expertise through advanced modules on sustainability in policy and practice, geohazards, climate science, global food security, and conservation in practice. Throughout the degree, students develop practical skills including data analysis, GIS mapping, fieldwork, and research methods, equipping them to pursue careers in environmental management, conservation, policymaking, and other fields requiring an informed understanding of human-environment interactions.
