COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography course at Sussex provides a comprehensive understanding of environmental, social, and economic processes shaping the world. In the first year, students gain a solid grounding in human and physical geography, studying subjects such as human geographies, the natural world, environmental management, sustainable development, and quantitative analytical skills. Year two builds on this foundation with modules in global climate change, environmental research skills, and global landscape dynamics, while offering options such as conservation biology, geographical information systems, sustainable development, and field-based learning both locally and overseas. Students develop practical skills in data collection, analysis, and environmental assessment, preparing them for real-world challenges. In the final year, students focus on advanced sustainable development and undertake a comprehensive Geography thesis, integrating knowledge and research skills gained throughout the course. Additional options allow exploration of topics such as geohazards, global food security, geographies of money and finance, climate science advances, and social issues including race, injustice, and identity. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, combining scientific understanding with social and policy perspectives, fieldwork, and practical experience. Graduates leave with the expertise to pursue careers in environmental consultancy, sustainable development, policy-making, research, conservation, urban and regional planning, and related fields, equipped to address complex global challenges and implement solutions for a sustainable future.
