COURSE CURRICULUM

The Genetics and Bioscience program at Sussex provides a comprehensive foundation in contemporary genetics, molecular biology, and biomedical sciences, preparing students for careers in research, healthcare, and biotechnology. In Year 1, students build core knowledge in areas such as cell biology, physiology, biochemistry, metabolism, and molecular genetics, while also exploring neuroscience, behaviour, biodiversity, and ecology. Research methods, ethics, and professional skills are integrated early to develop scientific reasoning and practical laboratory competence. Year 2 deepens understanding with modules in human genetics and genomics, developmental and evolutionary biology, structural biology, and neuronal function. Students develop research and professional skills specific to biomedicine and genetics, alongside optional studies in immunology, infectious disease, pharmacology, and neural circuits, allowing them to tailor their learning to interests and career goals. In Year 3, students undertake advanced modules on regulating gene expression, genome instability in disease and cancer, and an independent bioscience research project, providing hands-on experience in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication. Optional modules in areas such as cell signalling, drug discovery, neuropharmacology, bioinformatics, and innovation in bioscience enable further specialization. Across all years, the curriculum combines rigorous scientific training with research-led teaching, practical laboratory experience, and professional development, equipping graduates with the knowledge, technical expertise, and transferable skills necessary for success in a wide range of science and health-related careers.
