COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sustainable Development course at Sussex provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationships between environmental change, human wellbeing, and economic growth. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through core modules in economics, mathematics, environmental risks, and global development, gaining insight into key concepts such as microeconomics, macroeconomics, and sustainable management. In the second year, the focus expands to include advanced economic perspectives, econometrics, climate change, environmental economics, data coding, and geographies of the living Earth, helping students develop quantitative and analytical skills while understanding real-world sustainability challenges. The final year emphasizes applied knowledge, with modules on climate change economics, development economics, and data-driven economic analysis, alongside a range of options such as topics in growth and inequality, applied econometrics, international trade, advanced sustainable development, disasters and development, political ecology, global environmental change, global food security, and the politics of environment and development. This multidisciplinary approach equips students with the ability to design policies and strategies addressing economic stability, food security, global health, migration, displacement, and environmental challenges. Graduates are prepared for diverse careers in economic consultancy, policy analysis, research institutions, think tanks, public-sector agencies, and roles within the growing green economy, contributing to sustainable and equitable development on a global scale.
