COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Economics with Data Analytics degree at Sussex combines economic theory, quantitative methods, and data science to prepare students for careers in a data-driven economy. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematics for finance and economics, and programming concepts, alongside modules in applied mathematics and data structures and algorithms. The second year develops expertise in data science, econometrics, mathematical statistics, applied machine learning, and data coding and visualisation, while students can also choose options in advanced macroeconomics and microeconomics to tailor their studies. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through applied econometrics, machine learning, text analysis, and an independent applied economics dissertation, with further modules in economics and data science. Optional modules in experimental economics, international trade, behavioural economics, economics of crime, financial economics, and topics in growth and inequality allow students to specialise according to their interests. The course emphasizes practical application, equipping students with skills in programming, data analysis, statistical modelling, and interpreting complex economic information. Industry-focused learning through workshops, applied projects, and data visualisation exercises ensures graduates are prepared for careers in banking, consultancy, research institutions, government, and policy analysis, or for further postgraduate study in economics and data analytics.
