COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ecology and Conservation course at Sussex provides students with a comprehensive understanding of biological and ecological principles while equipping them with practical skills to address pressing environmental challenges. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through core modules covering cells, organisms, biodiversity, ecology, environmental management, and research methods, alongside options such as coastal ecology and neuroscience. In the second year, the focus shifts to conservation biology, population and community ecology, and professional research skills, with additional options including marine biology, evolutionary biology, and sustainable development, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests. The third year emphasizes independent research and applied conservation practice, with a bioscience research project forming the core experience, supported by modules in conservation in practice and specialized options such as behavioral ecology, animal-plant interactions, tropical rainforest science, and field courses in Africa and the Mediterranean. Throughout the course, students gain hands-on experience through fieldwork, laboratory work, and opportunities to engage in both local and international conservation projects. Graduates leave with strong analytical, research, and practical skills, ready to pursue careers in environmental management, conservation organizations, ecological consultancy, and wildlife protection, contributing to sustainable solutions for global ecological challenges.
