COURSE CURRICULUM

The Data Science BSc at Sussex provides students with a strong foundation in mathematics, programming, and computational techniques essential for analysing and interpreting data. In the first year, students gain grounding in discrete mathematics, linear algebra, engineering mathematics, programming concepts, data structures, algorithms, and computer systems, building the technical skills needed for data-intensive work. In the second year, the focus shifts to applied computational methods and probability, covering databases, program analysis, scientific computing, applied machine learning, probability and statistics, and software engineering, alongside options such as numerical analysis and professional and managerial skills. The third year emphasizes research, advanced statistical and machine learning methods, and data science applications. Students engage in modules including data science research methods, linear statistical models, neural networks, wider topics in data science, and a dissertation project, with additional options in applied numerical analysis, computational imaging, computer security, Monte Carlo simulations, and machine learning for health. Throughout the degree, students develop critical problem-solving skills, analytical thinking, and practical experience with industry-standard tools and techniques. The combination of theoretical knowledge, applied skills, and research experience prepares graduates for careers as data scientists, data analysts, software engineers, or other roles requiring expertise in computational and statistical data analysis, as well as for further postgraduate study.
