COURSE CURRICULUM

The Cognitive Science BSc at Sussex offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the mind, intelligence, and behaviour, combining elements of computer science, psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in cognitive science, programming, mathematical concepts, data structures, algorithms, and computer systems, while developing professional skills and participating in global design challenges. The second year builds on this foundation with modules in data science, program analysis, acquired intelligence, adaptive behaviour, applied machine learning, and databases, alongside optional modules that allow students to explore areas such as neural function, brain and behaviour, philosophical foundations, language and cognition, and software engineering. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics including knowledge and reasoning, computational imaging, human-computer interaction, intelligence in animals and machines, computer security, neural networks, natural language engineering, and the philosophy and science of consciousness, while undertaking an individual research project. The program is designed to integrate theoretical understanding with practical experience, providing students with opportunities to explore programming, AI, human cognition, and interdisciplinary research methods. Graduates are equipped with the skills to pursue careers in AI, robotics, human-computer interaction, cognitive research, data science, and other technology-driven fields that require expertise in intelligence, behaviour, and computational modelling.
