COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biomedical Science course at Sussex provides a comprehensive foundation in the biological sciences, preparing students to understand human health, disease, and the underlying molecular and cellular processes. In the first year, students study core subjects including cells, organisms, physiology, disease, biochemistry, metabolism, and molecular biology, while developing research skills and exploring neuroscience, behaviour, and chemistry for life scientists. Year two builds on this knowledge with modules in cell pathology, anatomy, human genetics, immunology, infectious disease, cell regulation, pharmacology, developmental biology, and clinical investigation, alongside professional research training. In the third year, students deepen their expertise with advanced topics such as immunology in health and disease, haematology, molecular neuropharmacology, genome instability in disease and cancer, and the molecular basis of infectious disease. A key component of the degree is the third-year bioscience research project, allowing students to apply their knowledge in a hands-on, investigative setting. Throughout the course, students can tailor their studies through optional modules such as cell signalling and therapeutics, drug discovery, programming for life sciences, and genomics and bioinformatics, fostering critical thinking, technical competence, and scientific communication skills. Graduates are equipped for careers in biomedical science, pharmaceutical research, biotechnology, healthcare, and related fields, with a strong foundation for further study or professional practice.
