COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology course at Sussex provides a comprehensive education in the life sciences, combining theoretical knowledge with extensive practical experience. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through core modules covering cells, organisms, physiology, biodiversity, ecology, and molecular biology, while gaining hands-on laboratory skills and research methods. Field courses, such as coastal ecology, allow students to study organisms and ecosystems in real-world environments. In the second year, the curriculum expands to include genetics, genomics, developmental biology, immunology, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and conservation. Students further develop their practical and analytical abilities through specialist field courses and research skills modules tailored to neuroscience, biomedicine, and ecology. This structure allows students to begin specialising in areas of interest while maintaining a broad understanding of biological systems. In the third year, students undertake an independent bioscience research project, applying the skills and knowledge they have developed throughout the course. A wide range of advanced options, including conservation, behavioural ecology, genomics, drug discovery, neurobiology, and tropical and Mediterranean field studies, enables students to tailor their learning to their career aspirations. Graduates gain expertise in experimental techniques, data analysis, and scientific communication, preparing them for careers in research, healthcare, conservation, biotechnology, and other science-related fields.
