COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biochemistry course at Sussex provides a thorough understanding of life at the molecular and cellular levels, combining theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory skills. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through core modules in cell biology, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and chemistry for life scientists, while developing essential research skills and understanding ethical considerations in science. The second year advances this knowledge with modules in immunology, infectious disease, cell regulation, pharmacology, and structural biology, alongside professional research skills and options such as human genetics, neuronal function, developmental biology, and neural circuits, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests. In the third year, students deepen their expertise with core modules in gene regulation, protein mechanisms, and an extensive research project, applying the techniques and knowledge gained throughout the course. Optional modules such as cell signalling, drug discovery, genomics, bioinformatics, molecular neuropharmacology, and innovation in bioscience and medicine provide further specialization. Throughout the degree, students gain hands-on experience in purifying and analysing biomolecules, exploring genomics data, and conducting independent research projects. Graduates leave equipped with strong analytical, data-handling, and research skills, preparing them for careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, forensic science, or other scientific and data-driven fields.
