COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sustainable Automotive Engineering course at Sussex provides students with a comprehensive grounding in engineering principles and practical skills essential for the automotive industry. In the first year, students build core knowledge in electrical circuits, materials, manufacturing processes, engineering mathematics, mechanics, thermodynamics, programming, and technical drawing, alongside real-world challenges such as the Global Design Challenge. The second year deepens technical expertise with modules in design for manufacture, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, electromechanics, numerical modelling, engineering simulations, and systems analysis and control, while also developing professional and managerial skills. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics directly related to sustainable automotive technology, including low-emission vehicle propulsion, electrical drive systems, dynamics of machines and vehicles, and new-generation vehicle technology. They undertake an individual project that applies their knowledge to practical engineering problems and can choose from options such as smart interactive sensing systems and sustainability in engineering to tailor their learning. Throughout the course, students gain hands-on experience in state-of-the-art labs, benefiting from Sussex’s research in vehicle dynamics, autonomous systems, and sustainable engineering. Graduates leave equipped with the expertise, practical experience, and problem-solving skills needed to contribute to innovation, sustainability, and technological advancement in the automotive sector.
