COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology and Media degree at Sussex provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the social world and the role of media in shaping culture and society. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in sociology, media, and digital culture through modules such as 21st Century Sociology, Foundations of Media and Digital Culture, and Themes and Perspectives in Sociology, alongside exploring the impact of digital technology on society. The second year emphasizes research skills, both quantitative and qualitative, through modules like Doing Social Research, while allowing students to examine specialized topics including media, memory, history, and advertising. Students can also select from a wide range of options covering areas such as social inequality, emotions and mental health, the climate crisis, and migration, enabling them to tailor their studies to their interests. In the final year, students complete an independent Sociology Project and can further explore issues in media and society through modules like Revolutionary Media, Capitalism, Growth and Ecological Crisis, and Digital Activism and Citizenship in Datafied Societies. The course combines theoretical understanding with practical research experience, equipping graduates with analytical, critical, and media literacy skills. These prepare them for careers in research, media, communications, public policy, and other fields where insights into society and its media landscapes are essential.
