COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in Sociology with Language at Sussex provides students with a comprehensive understanding of social life while developing language skills to enhance global and intercultural competence. In the first year, students build a solid foundation in sociological theory and methods through modules such as 21st Century Sociology, Critical Reading and Writing for Sociologists, Gendering the Life Course, and Making the Familiar Strange, while exploring options to tailor their learning. Students also begin learning a language from a choice of Arabic, British Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, or Spanish, with courses available from beginner to higher levels. In the second year, students advance their research skills with quantitative and qualitative methods, and examine social structures, emotions, health, work, migration, and inequality. Language study continues with intermediate and advanced modules, enabling practical and analytical language development. In the final year, students undertake a Sociology Project, applying their research expertise and sociological knowledge, while selecting from a wide range of optional modules that explore topics such as digital activism, ecological crisis, inequality, migration, crime, and family studies. Advanced language courses consolidate proficiency and intercultural communication skills. The degree equips graduates with analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in social research, policy, international organisations, advocacy, and related fields where understanding society and effective cross-cultural communication are essential.
